Hey Friends
It really feels like spring time here now (finally!) Because I’m a Brit I have to start every email talking about the weather haha.
I was talking to my friend Grace this week (have you listened to her album yet?) and we were talking about what we are proud of right now. And for me, it’s not an external achievement, it’s how I feel. In my teens, twenties and early 30s I was so dysregulated, it made everything so hard. Over the past few years I’ve really focussed on learning how to regulate my nervous system. My favourite ways are time in nature, singing and yoga nidra. Over winter, I took a leap and trained to become a Yoga Nidra Teacher. It’s helped me so much, it’s about time I did something with these skills. So on 2rd June I’m running my first Mother’s Morning Retreat. It’s a mini retreat for mothers to be soothed and restored with singing and yoga nidra. Being a mother to young children is very dysregulating because of the sleep deprivation, exhaustion, managing mood swings of little ones amongst other things. Back in Autumn 2022 I wrote a little article about nervous system regulation which has some helpful tips.
I found this nice graphic by Very Well Mind which gives an overview of what dysregulation is like.
In the article they recommend medication, therapy and journalling to help with dysregulation. Those things are all great and help some, but for me singing, nature time, journeying and yoga nidra hit the spot.
Why “warning signs’? The more regulated and balanced I become the easier it is for me to spot the warning signs of my system being out of whack. In times of stress we need to pay extra effort and attention in finding regulation.
It was Beltane this week! So I took the time one evening to journey into my inner landscape. I like to do drum journeying. In this technique, you use the rhythm of the drum to activate the theta state in your brain, which makes your imagination come alive. And on my journey I was given this advice, which I just had to make into a song. This is a sketch recorded on the Loopy app, which is a really hand app I use to experiment with ideas and play with harmonies. I will make a proper recording of this song in the near future!
In other news I’m obsessed with spider webs. There is something very inspiring about the methodical way that spiders create such delicate yet strong works of art. Here’s a beautiful dew covered web from an early morning walk by the River Medway.
I also spied some wild garlic, which I took home to add to salads and stir fries…
That’s all for now
May the fiery sun, activate your inner spark, and restore your energy
LOVE ALWAYS WINS
Laura
